What to Expect from your Holistic Melbourne Dentist

So, you are visiting us for the first time. Welcome! The first time you visit one of our clinics, we will conduct a comprehensive examination. Even if you have regularly visited another dentist and your teeth are in good health, our holistic Melbourne dentist needs to become familiar with your teeth, gums, jaw and overall health. This will enable us to pick up changes or emerging issues more easily in the future.

Your first examination will be typical of most dental check-ups. Our dental hygienist will professionally clean your teeth to remove the hard calculus (also called tartar) from around the gum line. The hygienist will also do an evaluation of your teeth and may take X-rays of your jaw and teeth structure. You may be offered advice on brushing, flossing and other oral care based on the results of the evaluation.

Our holistic Melbourne dentist will then check the X-rays and your teeth for signs of decay or signs of oral cancer and other diseases. Your gums will also be examined for anything out of the ordinary.
A comprehensive examination also includes a thorough review of your entire mouth, head and neck area to see if you have any issues with your temporomandibular joints (TMJ), which can cause head, neck and shoulder pain or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Our dentist also will ask about your medical history to see if there are any health issues that could have an impact on the condition of your teeth and gums.

Talk to us about all your health issues, even if you don’t think it’s very relevant. Many conditions can affect the health of the mouth. For example, patients with diabetes have a higher chance of developing periodontal (gum) disease. In turn, this condition can have an impact on the patient’s blood sugar levels. It’s also important to let the dentist know about any medications you are taking and the dosage levels so you aren’t given any new medications that will interact with those you are already taking.

Finally, let us know about any potential issues before we start including:

  • If you have sensitive teeth
  • If you think a new cavity might have appeared
  • If you have any lumps or unusual symptoms inside your mouth

Keeping us in the loop will help us make a correct diagnosis, recommend suitable treatments for you and get you on the path to better health.
